“Nothing’s Impossible!”  This is a very Disney-esque quote, something Walt Disney the man might have said himself and probably did at one moment or another during his life.  So it comes a no surprise that this quote happens to be the inspirational theme of the latest Disney Channel Original Movie, Cloud 9.  It is uttered several times by our heroine, Kayla Morgan, played by Dove Cameron, as she attempts to overcome the limitations that her parents and others in her life believe she has.

In Cloud 9, Kayla is the privileged (but not quite spoiled) daughter of the Summit Valley ski resort’s owner.  She also happens to be the top female snowboarder in Summit Valley and a member of the snowboarding “Team Swift,” which is led by Kayla’s boyfriend Nick Swift (Mike C. Manning) and coached by Nick’s hard-driving father, Sebastian (Jeffrey Nordling).  Things are generally going well for Team Swift, until Nick and his other teammates get Kayla in trouble with some ill-advised shenanigans.  With the resulting property damage, Kayla is dropped by Team Swift and is forced by her father to work for the resort’s dog kennel to pay for the damage.  At the kennel, she meets it’s co-owner and former top snowboarder, Will Cloud (Luke Benward).  At this point, Kayla gets a dose of humility when she is dumped by Nick, and female champion snowboarder Skye Sailor (Kiersey Clemons) joins Team Swift just in time for the big “Fire and Ice” competition.  Kayla convinces Will to train her for “Fire and Ice,” especially with the impossible “Cloud 9” maneuver that he himself could never do.  Kayla is forced to reach deep within herself as she attempts to overcome the doubts that her father, Nick and even Will have towards her chances of success at “Fire and Ice.”

Cloud 9 is  a true underdog story, and kids will definitely get inspired by Kayla’s bravery and drive to overcome the odds.  Dove Cameron is a newcomer to the Disney Channel family (her series Liv & Maddie premiered late last year), and with her determined spirit and perfect porcelain features, she channels all of the strong Disney Princesses from the most recent animated features.  Benward’s Will is down to earth and (mostly) supportive of Kayla, characteristics that are very similar to those of Kristoff from Disney’s animated hit Frozen.  In another Frozen parallel, Manning’s Nick starts off as Kayla’s love interest, a relationship that eventually turns antagonistic  later in movie, similar to how Prince Hans’ relationship with Princess Anna turned out.

Along with the “nothing’s impossible” theme, kids will also be able to learn about figuring out who their real friends are and what true friendship is – such as being supportive and standing beside them through thick and through thin.  Kayla is faced with some tough decisions along these lines, as she is given a tempting opportunity to rejoin her former Team Swift and abandon her new found friends.

Although the plotline and resolution are predictable (this is a kid’s squeaky clean Disney movie), Cloud 9 presents some valuable lessons and will inspire young ones to work hard, break through their limits and even take personal responsibility for their own actions.  Being a sports-oriented (snowboarding) movie, these themes come as no surprise and certainly are a refreshing alternative to Disney Channel’s last original movie, the light and airy (but fun) Teen Beach Movie.

Cloud 9 is airing at various times in the coming weeks on Disney Channel and is also available on Amazon Instant Video, with a DVD release coming shortly.
