Arriving in Fall 2014 as part of the premiere of Star Wars Rebels on Disney XD is the newest droid in the Star Wars Universe  – Chopper, a.k.a. C1-10P.  Chopper is not your typical friendly and eager  astromech droid, ready to sacrifice himself to save others like the ever-loyal R2-D2.  To the contrary, Chopper is described as “a lazy, cranky (if ultimately goodhearted) astromech droid.”

According to Dave Filoni, executive producer of Star Wars Rebels, “if Artoo is the family dog, Chopper is the cat.”  Chopper is an essential crew member of the Ghost, tasked with keeping the starship running and operable for its band of heroes, not unlike the duties Artoo performs for his own human masters.  Because of his many ‘unique’ upgrades and customizations, no other alien, human or droid would be able to handle Chopper’s assigned duties.

Chopper’s overall design, including the expressive arms that fold out of his head, is inspired by the early concept art for R2-D2 by Ralph McQuarrie.  The retro look of Chopper is meant to provide continuity with the droids of the original trilogy, as Star Wars Rebels takes place four years prior to the events of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope and 14 years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

Star Wars Rebels is scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel and will be followed by a series on Disney XD.
